Fonda Kaos and Deadly Devito discuss being ‘sporty’, unitards, and accessorising to make the most of your roller derby bruises…
Last week we were super excited to be recording a show inside the Wilton Road Cafe, home of London Fields Radio.
The station produces radio for the creative community in Hackney, and with an already impressive show list of East London musicians, designers, drag artists, DJs and cabaret stars, we had a lot to live up to!
We got together Deadly Devito, Kit Kat Power and Fonda Kaos to explain what it’s like to live the 10% glam, 90% sweaty lifestyle of a London Rockin’ Roller – including the basics of the game, what makes a roller derby girl, names and uniforms, and of course injuries!
We also cover some off-track topics close to every roller girl’s heart like giving vicious hits cute names (“the Andrex”), the movie Whip It, how to accessorise with a bruise, and the legality of taking hair and boob assists.
“There’s this hit called the “Seal Club”…and we’ve got some vegans in the league so we changed it to the “Quo”. Though frankly, I’m as anti-Status Quo as some people are anti-meat, so I’d quite like to change it back…”
- Deadly Devito
As if you needed more, we also play some lovely 80s Roller Derby themed tunes, interview coach Murder Urs who enlightens us about why she enjoys roller derby enough to play it for 3 years (the verdict: “bashing people”), and chat to “uber fan” Bob who’s followed our games around the world and had some insights to share about the DIY ethos of the sport.
Volume 1 is available to listen to at Mixcloud – and if you want to to keep up with the show, @ldnfieldsradio on Twitter will be announcing every new upload (and broadcast times if you live in the Hackney area).
Even better, if you are curious to hear more from our rollergirls, suggest some topics for the next show to pr@londonrockinrollers.co.uk!
Derby love, the London Rockin’ Rollers x
